PIMCO Names Michael Thompson as New Head of Asia ex‑Japan

  • Will lead talented team to continue delivering growth and value to clients
  • Will report to Kimberley Stafford, PIMCO’s Head of Asia-Pacific

Hong Kong (April 18, 2017) – PIMCO, a leading global investment management firm, has named Michael Thompson, Executive Vice President, as Head of Asia ex-Japan. Mr. Thompson, who currently heads PIMCO’s Singapore office and the Asia ex-Japan Wealth Management team, will assume his new responsibilities immediately and relocate to Hong Kong in the coming months. He will report to Kimberley Stafford, Managing Director and Head of Asia-Pacific.

Mr. Thompson has 23 years of investment experience. He joined PIMCO’s London office in 2006 where he served as Head of European third-party distribution. He relocated to Singapore in 2010 to assume leadership of the Asia Ex-Japan Wealth Management business, and became Head of the Singapore office in 2014. Mr. Thompson’s oversight of the Asia ex-Japan Wealth Management business included the successful buildout of PIMCO’s private and retail bank relationships which led to broader and deeper coverage in this important space.

Mr. Thompson will lead PIMCO’s Asia ex-Japan client-facing businesses, with the following direct reports:

  • Jung Park, Executive Vice President and Head of Korea
  • Abhi Shroff, Executive Vice President and Head of South Asia
  • Todd Staley, Senior Vice President and Head of Hong Kong Institutional and Taiwan
  • Scott Steele, Executive Vice President and Head of Hong Kong and Singapore Global Wealth Management
  • Haining Yin, Executive Vice President and Head of China

Mr. Steele will relocate to Singapore and will also assume Mr. Thompson’s previous role as Head of the Singapore office.

Head of PIMCO Asia ex-Japan

Mr. Thompson is an executive vice president and head of PIMCO Asia ex-Japan. To be based in Hong Kong, he is responsible for leading a team of investment professionals who deliver PIMCO's investment capabilities and services to a broad spectrum of clients across the region and for PIMCO's business strategy across Asia ex-Japan. Mr. Thompson joined PIMCO in 2006 and has held several positions with the firm, including head of the Singapore office, head of the wealth management group in Asia ex-Japan and head of European third-party distribution based in PIMCO’s London office. In his capacity as head of Singapore, Mr. Thompson chaired the board of PIMCO Asia Pte Ltd. Prior to joining PIMCO in 2006, he was responsible for U.K. business development and marketing at Western Asset Management Company. He has 23 years of investment experience and holds an undergraduate degree in economics and law from the University of Natal in South Africa. He has completed the Leadership Excellence through Awareness and Practice program at INSEAD.
